About Me

I am a specialist speech and language therapist with over 25 years of clinical experience specialising in working with children, young people and adults who stammer.

For the majority of my career (from 1993 to 2016) I worked at the Michael Palin Centre for Stammering in London, a nationally and internationally recognised centre of excellence in the assessment and treatment of stammering.

During my time at the Michael Palin Centre I held a senior clinical role and developed my knowledge and expertise in the field of stammering.

My caseload included children, young people and adults who stammer, some of whom presented with additional speech, language and communication needs such as delayed speech and language development, Down Syndrome, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Tourette Syndrome, Autism Spectrum Disorder etc.  I also contributed to the Centre’s research programme investigating the nature of stammering and the effectiveness of therapy and participated in the Centre’s international training programme.

I have published a number of clinical and research papers, presented at national and international conferences and I am co-author of Practical Intervention for Early Childhood Stammering: Palin PCI Approach (Kelman & Nicholas, 2008).  This is a practical manual for speech and language therapists providing a detailed guide to the Palin Parent-Child Interaction Therapy Programme developed at the Centre. The second edition of this manual (Palin Parent-Child Interaction Therapy for Early Childhood Stammering) is due for publication in February 2020 (pre-order here: www.routledge.com).
